The single most important thing: do not shave a Golden

Every summer, owners ask us to shave their Golden Retriever to keep it cool. We say no, and we explain why.

A Golden has a double coat. There is a coarse outer layer that repels water and blocks sun, and a soft dense undercoat that insulates. Insulation works both ways: it keeps heat in during cold weather and keeps heat out in hot weather. A shaved Golden is not a cooler Golden. It is a Golden with sunburn risk and no protective layer.

There is a second problem. In many double-coated dogs, shaving damages how the coat regrows. The undercoat comes back faster than the guard hairs, so the coat becomes patchy, woolly and worse at regulating temperature than it was before. This does not always reverse.

What actually keeps a Golden cool: de-shedding

De-shedding removes the loose, dead undercoat while leaving the working coat in place. That trapped dead fur is what makes a dog feel hot and matted. Removing it lets air move through the coat properly, which is exactly what the coat is designed to do.

A proper de-shed on a Golden removes an amount of fur that genuinely shocks owners the first time. Far more than months of brushing at home, because a high-velocity dryer reaches the undercoat in a way a brush cannot.

Why Goldens shed all year in Dubai

In cooler climates a Golden blows its coat twice a year. In Dubai, constant air conditioning and stable indoor light disrupt that cycle, so most Goldens here shed moderately all year round instead.

Practically, that means you cannot wait for a shedding season. It needs managing continuously.

The parts that get missed

Ears. Goldens have drop ears that trap moisture. In Dubai humidity, and especially in dogs that swim, ear infections are very common. Ears should be checked and cleaned at every groom.

Feathering. The long fur behind the legs, under the belly and on the tail mats first, because it is the part that catches sand and is hardest to reach at home.

Paws. Fur between the pads picks up sand and grit and can cause limping. It should be trimmed level with the pads, not scooped out from between them.

Skin. Goldens are prone to hot spots, which are patches of inflamed, moist skin that appear fast and spread. A groomer washing and drying the whole dog will usually spot one before you do.

A realistic schedule for a Dubai Golden

Full groom every 6 to 8 weeks, including bath, thorough dry, de-shed, ear cleaning, nails and trimming of the feathering and paws
De-shedding add-on every visit through the hotter months
Brushing at home twice a week, concentrating on behind the ears, the armpits and the trousers
A rinse after any swimming, and ears dried properly afterwards

The drying step matters more than owners think

A Golden’s undercoat holds a very large amount of water. If it is not dried all the way to the skin, the coat stays damp underneath for hours. That is how hot spots and skin infections start.

This is one of the practical reasons a proper groom beats a wash at home. A high-velocity dryer both dries to the skin and blows out the loose undercoat at the same time.
